How Great Jaws work (read this first)
A Great Jaw is camouflaged on the seafloor as a coral mound. It snaps shut with high damage and a neurotoxin pulse when anything brushes its trigger zone. The Lithium is inside; you don't take damage if you approach from directly above the closed shell and tap the centre while it's already closed.
If you walk into one open, you take the bite and the toxin DOT — bring at least one First Aid Kit. The recovery time is enough for a second clam to bite if you panic-swim sideways.
Where to find Great Jaws
Lithium is a confirmed harvestable resource of the Coral Gardens biome (0-200m). Great Jaw clams cluster on rocky cliff bases and in the mid-depth shelf zones — particularly in the Plateaus and Tufa Towers sub-regions. Look for what appears to be an oversized clam half-buried in the seafloor with a barely-visible seam.
South cliff Great Jaw cluster (mid-depth): A reliable group of 2-3 Great Jaws on the cliff face south of the Lifepod. First realistic Lithium farm. Standard Air Tank + Basic Fins is enough. Pair with Medical Gel Sac drops on the same trip.
East coral shelf: Smaller scattered Great Jaws on the east coral plateau, usually one or two per ridge.
Karakorum entrance lip: Denser clusters appear as you transition from Coral Gardens to Karakorum at around 100m. Pair with first Silver and Sulfur runs.
What Lithium crafts
Plasteel Ingot — Titanium Ingot + Lithium. Required for the High Capacity Air Tank and the Scout Ray Chassis.
Current Ring — Titanium Ingot + Wiring Kit + Lithium. Habitat builder buff piece.
Lithium Grains — direct food/utility chain
For a comfortable progression stockpile, target 6-8 Lithium per Karakorum trip: enough for 2 Plasteel Ingots (High Capacity Air Tank + Scout Ray Chassis) plus a Current Ring with leftovers for the food chain.
The safest harvesting technique
Approach from straight above, never from the side
Wait until the clam is fully closed before contact
Take the Lithium with the Survival Multitool then back-swim — do not rotate
Surface or move 15m+ away before approaching the next clam
Keep a First Aid Kit in your hotbar in case you trigger one early
Co-op trick: One player draws aggro with a Distraction Flare while the partner harvests. Halves the trip time and removes most of the damage risk.
