Co-op Guide

Subnautica 2 supports 1-4 players online. No split screen, no local co-op, crossplay on PC and Xbox.

If you're asking "how many players can play Subnautica 2", the short answer is 1, 2, 3, or 4 — all online only. There is no couch co-op and no plans to add one. Crossplay between PC and Xbox is live via Friend Codes; PlayStation joins when SN2 launches on PS5.

The hard limits

Maximum party size: 4 players. The cap is set at the engine level for Early Access. The developers have said anything beyond 4 would compromise multiplayer stability and the underwater rendering load.

Minimum to start a session: 1. You can start a "multiplayer" session solo and invite friends later. The world keeps your progress whether you're alone or with three friends.

Solo vs co-op progress: Each save file is tied to a multiplayer-mode flag, but you can swap freely between solo play in a co-op world and inviting friends to that same world.

Why there is no split screen

Subnautica 2 rendering pushes most consumer GPUs hard. Volumetric lighting, dynamic water caustics, and 1000+ creature instances per zone mean a split-screen mode would either drop the visual target dramatically or run at 30fps maximum. The team has been explicit that they will not ship a split-screen mode in EA.

This also means there is no two-player single-console option on PS5 or Xbox. Each player needs their own console and their own copy of the game.

How crossplay actually works

Crossplay uses Friend Codes. Each player gets a 6-character code from their in-game profile. Share the code, the host enters it, and the join works regardless of platform combination (PC ⇄ PC, PC ⇄ Xbox, Xbox ⇄ Xbox).

PS5 has not launched as of the current Early Access build. When it does, the same Friend Code system will extend to PS5 players. The developers have publicly committed to PS5 crossplay parity from launch day.

See the full co-op & crossplay setup guide for the exact invite flow and the troubleshooting checklist if a join fails.

How progression works with 4 players

World state is shared: the host's save is the canonical world
Inventory is per-player: what you scan, you keep — even after disconnecting
Blueprints are per-player: each player must scan their own fragments
Base building is shared: any player can extend the base, all resources come from a shared cache
Vehicle docks are shared: any player can dock and launch any built vehicle

This is important for 4-player parties because the natural temptation is to divide and conquer (one player farms Titanium, another Quartz, a third scans Repair Tool fragments). That works for resources but not for blueprints — every player needs to personally scan a fragment to unlock the recipe.

4-player division-of-labour template

For a clean 4-player early game, we recommend:

Player 1 (host): Camp One titanium + base build
Player 2: Cicada Wreck Lead + Repair Tool fragment scan (all 4 players will need this)
Player 3: Lifepod Quartz scatter + Coral Dome reconnaissance
Player 4: Necrolei Cyst farm + Sulfur prep for first Strong Acid

By the 90-minute mark you should have Repair Tool, Sonic Resonator, first Glass batch, and a Bioreactor running.
